I have spent much of my adulthood in a corporate environment, working hard to establish a successful career - not unlike most others my age. After making the unlikely decision to pack a bag and hike on my own, I met and connected with some amazing people. I grew to love day long walks and wanted to do more of it.
In 2014, this led to the beginning of “Walk Around the Bay” - a 5 day, 200km walk around Victoria’s Port Philip Bay. My experience on the hikes opened my mind to the benefits of this simple pleasure of a really (really!) long walk and I want to share it with others.
I have a brother and many friends who suffer from depression and I have spent many years not knowing how to help. It took me a while to learn that sometimes the best help is to just listen. This is also the reason I chose beyondblue. Not only do they support sufferers of depression, but also the family and friends around them.
I wanted to give my love for walking a purpose and so decided to make it a platform for people to come together and create a strong sense of connection and community. I strongly believe in the power of this connection to generate positive energy. Also, it's a great way to to get some exercise and summer sunshine, take in the beautiful scenery and meet new people!
To date, everyone who has joined me on this journey has not only felt felt rewarded but also learnt their own personal and sometimes profound lessons. Each year, even if this only happens to one person, then the walk achieves its purpose.
My mission, through this simple act, is to make as many people as possible aware that, everyone in their own way can have a positive impact on others.
My vision is to make "Walk Around the Bay" a movement that brings a sense of connection, positivity and community to everyone involved... hopefully for years to come.
